It is with deep gratitude and honor that I have served you as a Hawthorne City Council member since December 11, 2018. I am thankful and proud of the many accomplishments I have achieved in these 7 years in office. As your Champion of Integrity, I continue to promote government transparency and ensure that your voices are heard. My priority has remained the well-being of all citizens by strengthening public safety, advocating for business and economic development, promoting smart housing/homeownership, and capitalizing on Measures R and M to improve our roads and streetlights.
Since 2019, Hawthorne has remarkably survived the COVID pandemic and economic hardship, as our financial stability hasn’t changed, thanks to many partnerships with the business community, the State, County, and Federal Government. I maintained constant surveillance of the needs of our citizens, our business community, our staff and colleagues, homeless individuals, neighborhood associations, civic groups, and churches.
I was elected to serve you, and thanks to concerned citizens and neighborhood associations meetings I attended, I’ve been able to accomplish the following:
CLEAN-UP HAWTHORNE
During my first month in office, I launched a campaign to clean up Hawthorne, where I asked the city manager to renegotiate with Republic Services to give each resident of Hawthorne 20 free bulk items per year. Before, there were only 3 items. I held my first town hall meeting with businesses, apartment owners, and residents to hear their concerns, especially about rent increases and other utilities issues. With the help of the community and support of my colleagues, we are transforming our city. Most recently, with the help of our City Manager and Public Works Department, we launched the Trash Pick Up Initiative, where our staff and Martinez Landscaping go around the city daily to pick up additional bulk items in our Streets and Allies.
Homeless & Affordable Housing
I was the first elected official to attend the South Bay Cities Council of Governments (SBCCOG) Homeless task force, where I began to collaborate with Los Angeles County and other cities in South Bay to bring funding and programs to help our Homeless individuals in Hawthorne. The funding has increased from 40 thousand a year to 500 thousand. Thanks to my leadership and partnership with other agencies, I was instrumental in the development of Hawthorne Tiny Homes, which housed our unhoused population on a temporary basis until placed in permanent housing.
During my first term in office, I was Influential in bringing Standards Company to create the Joint Power Agreement (JPA) to acquire the South Bay Millennium Project on Crenshaw. This housing project is for medium-income individuals, which will save renters about $600 per month on rent. The JPA and its property management will give priority to first responders, police officers, teachers, and military personnel. Most recently, I secured a $ 6 million dollars soft loan from the SBCCOG Housing Trust for the Cordary Adobe development project that will build 92 low-income units/housing for our residents.
Parking ChallengeS
Working with my colleagues, I encouraged the Public Works Department to conduct a parking study/solution on how to address the parking issue in our neighborhoods. I encouraged the “T parking “Pilot program, and currently we are doing a pilot program for pay parking to ensure that customers have parking available to stop, dine, and shop in Hawthorne. Furthermore, we are conducting a survey of potential parking district permits for our residents. In addition, a few months ago, I secured $ 1.8 million from SBCCOG-Measure M funds to begin planning and designing a 5-story public parking garage at the Betty Ainsworth Parking Lot (Doty & El Segundo Blvd.)
Employee Wellness
I was Instrumental in bringing a finance consultant firm to help us restructure our liability to CALPERS, which is saving Hawthorne 8 million $ per year.
Public Safety
Worked with Hawthorne Police Department (HPD) leadership to increase presence at all our parks and encourage more community policing programs such as coffee with the cop program, mobile/trailer policing outreach, and police on bikes throughout our community. In my second term, I encouraged and supported our HPD innovation technology in areas such as surveillance cameras, drones, and aircraft policing, which bring enhanced safety to our residents and officers.
Road Infrastructure
Thanks to the Public Works and my leadership in advocating M & R dollars, the city is on its way to completing 34 projects in our streets and alleys. Improvement projects such as: 120th Street, North Hawthorne Imperial Hwy, El Segundo, Van Ness, Crenshaw, and most recently, the Moneta Gardens community.
Other requested projects under my directives: since 2019, the Public Works Department has installed a left-turn signal at 135th St & Aviation to reduce traffic, installed additional streetlights along Imperial at Lutheran Oliver Church, installed speed bumps on Truro Ave, Lemoli Ave, and on 118th Street west of Inglewood Ave. Direct staff installed a 4-way stop on Doty & 115th, Washington and 141st, and Birch and 126th Street to slow traffic down on those intersections.
Also, in progress is the creation of 2 Lanes left on Crenshaw & 120th to alleviate traffic from freeway entrances/exits.
Facilities Infrastructure Improvement
Thanks to Team Hawthorne, spearheaded by our City Manager and other local officials, the city is nearing completion of the renovation of the Hawthorne Senior Center, the construction of a new public works facility, and this fall, the groundbreaking of our new City Hall.
Economic Development
Strong supporter of Hawthorne facade improvement program, which face-lifted some of the small business facilities in our city. I was instrumental in bringing new businesses to Hawthorne, which have generated additional sales tax revenues for our city.
Continuing to advocate and work with local developers to increase the number of hotels in our city with good-paying jobs. Lobbied investors and business developers to invest in Hawthorne. An Example is Archer Aviation, EV Charges, Valar Atomic, Waymo, WOW Media, etc.
Wellbeing of our Community
Worked collaboratively with the Chamber of Commerce to bring the Hawthorne farmer market. Worked collaboratively with Hawthorne School District to bring the Venice Clinic into our schools and Community. Encouraged our city to work with Hawthorne School District to provide Crossing Guards to protect our children. Working with SBWIB to provide jobs and vocational training to our youth.
