Alex Monteiro Biography
Alex holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in education and counseling, along with a Pupil Personnel Services Credential from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Originally from the Cape Verde Islands, he came to the United States 42 years ago.
For the past 40 years, Alex has worked with schools, social service agencies, and community groups to help underprivileged children gain access to the physical and mental health services they need to succeed academically.
Elected to the Hawthorne City Council in 2018, Alex has held several leadership roles throughout his career, including:
- Project Coordinator, International Healthy City, Boston
- Public Relations & Health Educator Coordinator, Arroyo Vista Family Health Center, Los Angeles
- Executive Director, LAUSD-Roosevelt School-Based Clinic, East Los Angeles
- Health Start Coordinator, Hawthorne School District and Richstone Family Center
Currently, Mr. Monteiro serves as President and Executive Director of Moneta Gardens Improvement, Inc. (MGI), a nonprofit organization supporting families and children in Hawthorne. He is also the Chief Administrator of the South Bay Universal Child Development Center (“The Castle”), another nonprofit dedicated to providing early childhood education in the community.
